Do Water Tanks Need Relining? What You Need to Know
Water tanks need to be relined in order to ensure that the water held within is safe and free of contamination. What does the water tank relining process entail and what should you know about water tank relining for your business, home, or community?
The Importance of Clean & Safe Water
Water cleanliness can be classified into two categories: the quality of the water itself and the quality of the tank holding the water. Nowadays, most of us in cities take it for granted that our tap water will come out clean and safe, and most of us are also cautious about how we store it. BPA-free water bottles, for example, are extremely popular because many of us are concerned about plastics leaching into our water from our bottles.
Thousands of years ago, the ancient Romans also understood water cleanliness but perhaps neglected the importance of the means of conducting and storing water. The aqueducts, true marvels of precision engineering, carried water from the Alps and other mountain watersheds and carried it sometimes thousands of kilometres to towns and cities across the empire. Lead pipes, however, most certainly led to all kinds of illnesses that affected citizens. Even clean, fresh water can become a health hazard if it’s transported or held in materials like lead, which is something we know today that they didn’t back then.
Modern water tanks must therefore prioritise health and safety, which is why lining them is essential for preserving the quality of water. Moreover, clean water is essential for regulatory compliance and the tanks must be routinely cleaned, inspected, and relined as necessary.
What is Tank Relining?
Tank relining is the process of replacing water tank lining with a new protective barrier inside of the tank’s surface area. The lining itself is designed to act as a barrier between the galvanised steel (or whatever other material is used) of the tank structure itself and the water held within.
They work a little like a vapour barrier used in the foundation of a home, although the purpose is completely different. Vapour barriers are designed to repel water from the concrete foundation of a structure and can prevent water from seeping through any cracks that may be present in the wall. Both are protective barriers, but water tank liners need to keep the water inside of the tank without exposing it to leaching, rust, or contaminants from the (otherwise) exposed metal surface.
Do Water Tanks Need to Be Relined?
All water tanks need to be relined on occasion to uphold the quality of the water therein, to maintain regulatory compliance, and to avoid damage to the water tank itself. Any visible cracks or leaks are sure signs that the tank needs relining and perhaps remedial repairs, for example.
Visible signs of rust or corrosion or water tests that yield high levels of contaminants are also signs that your tank must be relined.
Many of these problems may have you worried about replacing the tank altogether. Rarely is this necessary and quite often you can get by just by replacing the liner, which is far more cost-effective and simple than replacing the entire water tank.
To get your water tank relined, first consult with a reputable water tank company in Sydney and request an inspection of your water tank.
